At Baker Lake Pride, we believe breeding should always be approached thoughtfully and intentionally. Our priority is the health, well-being, and future of our own dogs and the puppies we bring into the world.

What is changing?

For our upcoming litter, we will not be accepting deposits until Paisley begins her heat cycle and we have made the decision to move forward with the breeding. Families who are already on our waitlist will be contacted at that time, and deposits will be accepted from those families before we open availability more broadly.

Why is it changing?

We have made this change because we feel it is fair for everyone. Holding a significant deposit for 8–12 months before a puppy is expected is a long time for families to have their money committed, particularly when breeding plans can change despite our best efforts.

More importantly, this approach gives us the flexibility to make the best decision for Paisley and our breeding program when the time comes. We never want to feel that we have to have a litter because deposits have already been accepted. We want the ability to evaluate Paisley’s health, timing, readiness, and our own circumstances before deciding whether a litter is right for us.

By waiting until Paisley comes into heat, we can make that decision with the most current information available and move forward only when we are confident that it is the right choice.

How will this change affect me?

For the families who previously placed a deposit with us, we have returned those deposits while honouring their original place in the pick order. When Paisley comes into heat and we decide to move forward with the litter, these families will be contacted first and their original pick order will remain unchanged.

For all other families interested in a Baker Lake Pride puppy, joining our waitlist does not require a deposit or financial commitment. It simply allows us to stay in touch and gives families the opportunity to be contacted when we are ready to move forward.

We believe this approach allows us to remain responsible, flexible, and intentional while giving our families greater peace of mind as they wait for their future puppy.

Bringing a Portuguese Water Dog into your home is an exciting and lifelong commitment. To ensure our puppies are placed in the best possible homes, we follow a structured application process.

Potential families must complete our puppy application form. This helps us understand your experience, lifestyle, and expectations to ensure that a Portuguese Water Dog is the right fit for you.   Applications are currently being accepted.

Option to secure your pick order with a deposit:

The $500 deposit is non-refundable once breeding has taken place, except in the event that the litter does not take (i.e., the breeding is unsuccessful) — in that case, your deposit will be fully refunded.  Your deposit is credited toward the full purchase price of the puppy, with no additional fees added.
While we do our best to pair families with their preferred puppy, we cannot guarantee the colour,  gender or number of puppies of any litter. Placing a deposit gives you priority in the pick order, but if your specific preference isn’t available, the deposit remains non-refundable once breeding has taken place.

Don't want to put a deposit?  No problem!  If you’re not ready to commit, we’re happy to add you to our interest list. Just note that families with deposits will select their puppies first.

At seven weeks of age, each puppy is assessed using the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test (PAT) by an impartial group. This evaluation helps us determine temperament, confidence, and energy levels, ensuring the best match between puppy and family.  

We use both your application and the PAT scores to suggest a puppy suited to your home. We take great care in matching temperament and energy levels to your lifestyle, ensuring a successful and happy placement. 

Once your puppy is selected, we require a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the total cost to secure your puppy.

On the agreed-upon pick-up day, we will both sign the puppy contract, and the remaining 50% balance must be paid before the puppy is released to you.

Once we complete the CKC registration of your puppy, we will forward you a digital copy of your puppies CKC registrations.
