PWD are a low to non-shedding breed. The term hypoallergenic is used in the dog breeding industry to promote this dog characteristic. If you, or someone in your family have dog allergies, it is recommended that you spend some time with an adult PWD to ensure you can tolerate the breed with your particular allergy. Send us an email and we can arrange a visit with one of our dogs.
Believe it or not, the Portuguese Water Dog does need to be taught to swim. They can be a little timid with new things and will look to their people to gain confidence when swimming. Once they gain the confidence, they have this skill for life.
PWD do not shed (or shed very little) so they need to be groomed regularly. The frequency will depend on their coat , their lifestyle and your preference. At minimum, I would say every 12-16 weeks and more often depending on your preference. I groom my dogs myself and try to do it every 4-6 weeks.
Portuguese Water Dogs are a working breed and need to be part of the family. This energetic breed is not for everyone.
Baker Lake Pride follows the PWDCC recommended health testing prior to any breeding. Results are available upon request.
